Pre-Work
Share
Once you’ve planned your layout in detail and your van is road-safe, you’re ready for one of the most critical prep stages: pre-work before insulation and interior building. Doing this step properly will save you from costly and exhausting rework later. Trust me — I learned this the hard way.
Window and Vent Installation
Depending on whether you bought a cargo or passenger van, it might already come with windows. If you plan to add more windows or roof vents, this is the time to do it — before any insulation, wiring, or paneling starts.
Trying to cut holes through your insulated, paneled walls later is a nightmare and a massive waste of time and money. So plan wisely:
- Side windows: Some vanlifers skip them entirely for privacy and stealth. Others install large windows on both sides. It’s all about personal preference.
- Roof vents & skylights: Absolutely mandatory if you want to avoid condensation, heat build-up, and stale air.
- Air conditioning units: If you plan to install AC, do it now as it usually requires major cuts and reinforcement.
“Space Pods” — Optional Rear Extensions
These fiberglass extensions add extra headroom or length at the back of your van. Useful if you’re tall and plan to sleep sideways.
- Price range: €500–€1,200 per pod
- Only needed if you’re above 1.85 m or need the extra width
My Mistakes — So You Don’t Repeat Them
- Skipped ventilation: I foolishly thought a fan wasn’t necessary. In 40°C heat with no airflow, I regretted it instantly. I had to install a MaxxFan after finishing the ceiling — total disaster.
- Ignored waterproofing: I didn’t double-check my roof seals. After a storm, I found soaked insulation and had to tear everything out. Always test your van with a pressure washer before moving forward. If any old seals look brittle or cracked — replace them. Don’t guess. Fix it now.
Must-Have Roof Ventilation Options
You don’t have to go premium, but do install something reliable:
- MaxxAir MaxxFan Deluxe – industry favorite, multiple speed settings, remote control
- Fiamma Turbo-Vent – compact and quieter
- Dometic Fan-Tastic Vent – strong air movement, good value for price
Waterproofing Checklist Before Building
✅ Inspect every seam, edge, and joint — especially around factory roof seams and screw holes
✅ Use a pressure washer to simulate heavy rain
✅ Replace any dried or cracked sealant — don’t patch over it, remove and reapply
✅ Reseal any aftermarket installations (vents, AC, solar panel mounts)
✅ Use high-quality sealants like Sikaflex 221 or Dekasyl MS-5
Final Words
This stage might feel boring or slow — but skipping it will cost you more than just time. Water damage, overheating, lack of airflow... all are common issues I’ve seen (and experienced myself) because of poor planning.
Take the time to do this pre-work thoroughly. Once it’s done, you’re finally ready to move into insulation, electrical, and the fun part — building your dream layout.
Stay tuned for the next chapter about insulation!
